We often get asked by collectors old and new wanting to try out Kotobukiya Statue where best to start. Due to a number of categories they have, it’s quite overwhelming to give a correct answer. We always say it depends on the collectors line, prefered characters, price range, and storage space ( never underestimate the storage space problem ), etc. But it got me thinking that there should be a basic starting or a reference point to ease the introduction to this amazing product (Yes we personally love Kotobukiya in case it’s still not obvious )!
We also get a lot of questions what’s the difference between ARTFX, ARTFX+, ARTFX J… so we decided to list them down here to give you a basic idea so you can choose wisely. Please bear in mind though that this information is based on the products we have sold, offered, and have seen over the past year so this is in no way an official information from Kotobukiya – we will probably update this article from time to time depending on the product as they evolve.
If you have seen the product before in stores, web or brick and mortar, you’d notice that there’s always a preceding category like ARTFX or ARTFX+ or Bishoujo. In case you are wondering, here is the differences we’ve seen so far.
Top of the line category for Kotobukiya is the FINE ART statues. Characters ranges from Marvel, DC, pop culture icons and video game characters. They are more expensive than the other lines due to their limited quantity and awesome crazy detail. Most if not all are individually numbered at the bottom of the base so if you have one, you are very lucky! Price range varies, new releases cost around ₱11,000.00 up to ₱15,000.00 depending on the character and detail. Some sought after Fine Art Statues are priced up to ₱37,000.00 to ₱40,000.00 depending on the availability in the secondary market.
The materials we see them use at this great statues are usually cold cast resin. They are usually in a closed box and always limited in quantity. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for so expect top-notch sculpting details and awesome paint job.
In most cases statue scale is at 1/6th excluding the base of the figure and you’d need a bit of assembling work as there are times where you can interchange body parts and faces.
There used to be FINE ART Bust available before which is cheaper but we don’t see Kotobukiya manufacture them for some time now.
Next is the ARTFX series. Characters from this series ranges from Marvel, DC, pop culture icons and video game characters. They are in the middle price range for collectors but still depending on the availability, detail, and popularity of the character, prices could sky-rocket as well. From what we’ve seen, most are made of PVC, ABS, Magnets, and LED lights. The LED lights depend on the characters like Iron Man or Darth Maul UKIYO-E STYLE.
As for the scale and height, we have seen ARTFX statues at 1/7th scale although most are at 1/6th scale like the FINE ART pieces. The packaging also varies from window box where in you can see the figure inside while we have also seen statues in closed boxes.
ARTFX+ is probably Kotobukiya’s entry-level for statues and one of the most famous line. Price range are also in the middle but you would still get awesome detail and the paint job are top-notch. Materials used most of the time are PVC, ABS, and Magnets.
There are times where you open the package, place your statue on the magnetic base and just display. But there are also those that are called Snap Fit wherein you would need a little assembly work to enjoy your statue. There is an instructional manual when the statue is Snap Fit but don’t worry, it’s really easy. You don’t actually need the instructional manual but it’s cool that they put it inside the box anyway.
Majority of the statues are at 1/10 scale and it’s great to display them side by side as they are proportioned in height. Package also comes in either window or closed box.
ARTFX+ also recently revealed the DC Comics classic heroes. Although they look like action figures, they are actually none articulated statues.
Our personal favorite! Another famous for collectors are the Kotobukiya Bishoujo line. Literally means “beautiful young girl”, so the statues are… that’s right…all girls. Characters ranges from Marvel, DC, Star Wars, Video Games and POP Culture Icons. Majority use PVC and ABS as the main material for the statues. Usually Bishoujo statues are at 1/7th scale this days so it would be a little off to display them along side your ARTFX+ or ARTFX statues. But they look good together.
Like some ARTFX+, Bishoujo sometimes also has alternative parts like the face specially if the character has a mask.
The packaging is usually window box so you can actually display them without taking them out of the box. But please be wary, Kotobukiya statues are meant to be taken out of the box in order to let the paint and material breath. Taking them out of the box makes them last longer than keeping them inside the box but that’s another topic.
All the statues in this line are women or POP culture icons interpreted as Bishoujo style like Jason and Freddy.
Based from Anime or Manga characters, Artfx J are usually at 1/7th or 1/8th scale. Materials used with this line are PVC and ABS. These statues are sick and very detailed oriented as Japanese Anime characters tend to have detailed costumes or features. Don’t believe? Check out the paint job and photo for ARTFX J Kotobukiya Statues.
Price range for ARTFX J in the country is around the same range as ARTFX line, averaging about ₱4,000.00 to ₱7,000.00 depending on the detail and character popularity/license. ARTFXJ packaging is usually a window box as well.
Kotobukiya Ani Statues are great for fans of characters based on Japanese light novels such as Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, or card games such as Rage of Bahamut or Kantai Collection, or Japanese media franchise Cardfight!! Vanguard. Incredible detail and intricate paint job are put into these figures by Kotobukiya so the price range is pretty above normal. But with finish products like this, it’s worth it.
Materials used for these awesome statues are PVC and ABS. The scale for these statues play around the 1/7th and 1/8th scale, perfect for display while not sacrificing the detail.
Since we only try to discuss Kotobukiya statues, we will skip the other lines such as Plastic Model Kits, Cu-Poche, Chopsticks and other geek items! Hope this helps you in your decision on trying the product as we believe they are awesome.
